Two to six chapters of each Torah portion are read during the course of the week. There are 54 parashots, or weekly servings. With the divisions corresponding to the lunisolar Hebrew calendar, which contains up to 55 weeks, the majority of Torah reading follows an annual cycle that starts and ends on the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah. The precise number of weeks varies between leap years and regular years. The concluding parasha, V'Zot HaBerachah, is always read on Simchat Torah, and two weeks are always dedicated to Passover and Sukkot. There may be up to 53 weeks available for the other 53 pieces, with the exception of the "immovable" last portion. Some readings are merged in years with less than 53 weeks to make up the required number of weekly readings.
